Performs well on iMac 5k
Having already played this extensively on PS4, I thought I’d get the Mac version for the better graphics and the opportunity to play when my son is hogging the PS4! I’m running a iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) with 4 GHz Intel Core i7 and 32GB DDR3 RAM, a 3TB Fusion Drive and, most importantly, AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4GB.
First the bad: - The graphics are not substantially better than the PS4 version, if you want to maintain a similar framerate (see my settings below). - The level load times are substantially worse than the PS4 version, even though my Mac uses a Fusion Drive, but my PS4 has an ordinary Samsing 2TB hard disk. Now the Good: + It’s the same astonishingly good game + It does look amazing (and, a bit better than the console versions) + It works beautifully with the PS4 Dual Shock gamepad. As for the game itself - on PS4, less than 20% of players got past Mission 4! It’s a hard game, and the difficulty settings below Medium don’t make much difference at all. This game is only going to appeal to very patient players who like stealth games, and are particular fans of the first Alien movie and the world surrounding it. Contrary to most reviews, the “look” of the game is not solely that of the first Alien movie… later on you get a lot from Aliens in terms of visual style… but you will never get Aliens-style gameplay! For reference, these are the settings I’m using: FOV = 50 Film Grain = about 75% Fullscreen Res = 2560x1440 Vert Sync = On Level of Detail = Ultra Shadow Map Resolution = 1536 Shadow Mapping = High Particles = High Motion Blur = on Depth of Field = on Chromatic Aberration = on Planar Reflections = On SSAO = Standard Texture Filtering = Anisotropic 4x Volumetric Light = On Anti-Aliasing = FXAA You may need extra toliet paper when you play this!!!!
It is a very good game, I have an i7 3.4ghz iMac and it runs brilliantly, very atmospheric and it really does feel your on the Nostromo, play with a pair of headphones on in the dark. and make sure you have an extra pair of boxer shorts at the ready. For those with a heart condition or a nervous disposition, I would leave this well alone, but for the rest of us, it is a brilliant game, and eerie as hell!!!!.
Brilliant!!!! Love this game
First thing to say is that i’m not someone who ‘gets into’ computer games easily, in fact I rarely play them but this one is fantastic! I love the fact you play in the first person and very quickly I get lost in the game. The sound effects are really gripping too.
I was concerned whether my old iMac would be able to run this game and i’m v pleased that it does so without any issues (even in max resolution, full screen). For info, my iMac is a mid-2010, 2.93GHz Intel Core i7, 12gb RAM, Graphics: ATI Radeon HD5750 1024MB. Information
